Torrente – Orquesta Típica Lucio Demare

Este es uno de esos tangos escuchados en la milonga que siempre me gustó y, si bien es objetivamente lindo, había cosas a las que no le había prestado atención hasta el momento de entrar a transcribirlo que me parece lo hacen especial (o hacen a la orquesta de Demare especial).
En principio, trabajos en la armonía que están buenísimos. Súper orgánicos, súper lógicos y sencillos de seguir. Pero está en constante movimiento.
En segundo lugar… la tonalidad! Si mayor, puede resultar polémico para algunos, pero cuando pasa a Si menor, para luego hacer unos momentos en Re Mayor todo suena más luminoso!
En tercer lugar, la orquestación: Demare trabaja mucho con la orquestación del lado de la dinámica. El tango en general es un género con el que se puede hacer muchísimas cosas sin orquestar la dinámica, pero cuando sucede… es para chuparse los dedos.
Cuarto lugar, unísonos: no hay nada más lindo y sencillo que un buen unísono entre la mano izquierda del bandoneón y las cuerdas.
Y por último, y saliendo de la orquestación también, los cambios entre melodías rítmicas y melodías expresivas. Tiene grandes momentos en los que las cuerdas salen de un rítmico compartido con los fuelles para desdoblarse en un contracanto expresivo.

This is one of those tangos heard at the milonga that I’ve always liked and, although it is objectively beautiful, there were things I hadn’t paid attention to until I started transcribing it that seem to make it special (or make Demare’s orchestra special).
Firstly, the work on harmony is fantastic. It’s super organic, super logical, and easy to follow. Yet it’s in constant motion.
Secondly… the tonality! B major might be controversial for some, but when it shifts to B minor, then has some moments in D major, everything sounds brighter!
Thirdly, the orchestration: Demare works a lot with the dynamic side of orchestration. Tango, in general, is a genre where you can do so many things without orchestrating dynamics, but when it happens… it’s fantastic.
Fourth, unisons: there’s nothing more beautiful and simple than a good unison between the left hand of the bandoneon and the strings.
And finally, also related to orchestration, the transitions between rhythmic melodies and expressive melodies. There are great moments when the strings break away from a rhythm shared with the bandoneons to unfold into an expressive counter-melody.
I’ll leave a deeper analysis of all these elements and more for another time.
